I recently attended a screening of Viceland's new series on tattoos with Grace Neutral. I brought a note book to this event so I could write down anything that may help towards my brief.
Duncan X (Mr X)
Brought up in a middle class background and didn't know anyone with tattoos as 'they were for bad people'.
he wanted to differ from society so covered himself from head to toe.
"you can redesign your body and recreate yourself"
As a tattooist he notices that alot of people get the same thing ie.
'I want a Japanese sleeve but cannot be visible for work'
'pocket watch and roses'
The documentary also looks at an online blog where barely clothed, tattooed girls are photographed. Talking to one of the models it is noted that girls with tattoos are often sexualised or seen as a sexual deviant
Tattoos originated in the UK for subcultures such as skinheads, teddyboys, mods etc however also gained negative connotations with Nazi's and far right extremists.
Tattooing started as a secretive art form for lower classes however the introduction of the internet exposed it to the world. 'The internet has no secrets'
