OUGD603 - Research Brief - Focussed Research

After previously researching punk within this brief, I noticed how broad it was as a subculture. Because of this, I have decided to look at different areas within punk, one of which I will ultimately choose to base my zine after.

Music
Punk was born through music in the mid-1970s in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. It developed from 1960s garage rock, punk rock bands rejected rejecting ideas behind mainstream 1970s rock. Influential bands include:

Ramones,

The Sex Pistols,

The Clash,

Dead Kennedys,
The Stooges,
Crimpshrine,
Bad Religion and
Minor Threat

Clothing
A punk's staple clothing
The punk style has varied over time, ranging from deliberately offensive T-shirts, leather jackets as well as bondage and S&M clothes. Appropriate imagery can be seen below:

Accessories worn by punks
Accessories worn by punks have ranged in style throughout time however some have become influential and are still seen in modern fashion. This includes:
badges, patches, safety pins, collars, chains and earrings.

Brands inspired by punk
Alexander McQueen
Many of McQueen's early shows and collections were heavily influenced by punk style. Such shows include A/W 1996.

"it's a jungle out there" 1997.

Other later shows such as A/W 2016, design by Sarah Burton were also influenced by punk style and also pushed ideas on accessories.

Vivienne Westwood
Westwood's whole aesthetic was originally based off punk culture as this is the era which she grew up. Because of this, many photos of herself in the early days of her career were representative of punk style. I found out about this online and took out some books at the library on the fashion designer, scanning in appropriate imagery.

Junya Watanabe
Junya Watanabe is a Japanese fashion designer, originally the protégé of Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo. His collections are often based off punk style and show how it has adapted into modern culture.

Political views
often known as having left-wing, revolutionary, anarchist or progressive views, punk political ideology covers many political ideologies. Punk-related ideologies are mostly concerned with individual freedom and anti-establishment views. Common punk viewpoints include anti-authoritarianism, a DIY ethic, non-conformity, anti-corporatism, anti-government, direct action and not "selling out". These views were often publicised through music and zine culture.
