OUGD504 - Binding research

Saddle stitch

This is an cheap and quick way to produce a publication and should be considered for my own project. Despite being practical in terms of production, when there are too many pages they often won't fall flat when opened. This can be prevented by splitting the book into different signatures.

This bind can also be used as a hardback and will often last longer than the glue in a perfect bound book as the thread should not come undone.

Perfect bind

This binding method involves gluing pages into the spine of the book. Paper back books are usually bound using this method so may not be suitable for my coffee table photo book.

Although most binding methods can be done by hand using the uni resources, these techniques would be quicker and cleaner if done by a machine as it would be in industry. Despite this, I can get similar results if I am to take care during the binding process.
